Boho & Festival Looks for Inside & Out

This time of year always fills us with yearnings to be at a festival… outside, dancing, fabulous live music, and lovely drinks. But then we give our heads a shake and remember the reality of loo queues, mud, rain, nasty tents, horrific bar prices and getting crushed in the mosh pit. These days we generally prefer to watch to the headliners on a screen whilst reclining on a lounger in the garden, cocktail in hand. If this sounds like you then read on as we bring you our suggestions for making your garden, terrace and interiors boho-festival-friendly!

Under My Umbrella (ella, ella, eh, eh)

Having just discovered the joys of a patterned parasol (those standard garden centre dark green or ivory ones are a bit dull really, aren’t they?), those from The East London Parasol Company come in loads of colours and really add that indulgent and colourful bohemian vibe to the garden or terrace. Colourful cushions and a tiled floor create a civilised outdoor living and relaxing area, without the mud and queues…similar tiles to these shown here are our Granito Outdoor Porcelain Slabs in grey – they’re also available in black for a dramatic look.

Cosy In The Corner

We love the idea of a corner set – enough space for several people to sit and sip wine and scoff lovey nibbles, or also just right for two to recline and listen to some festival sounds. Extra throws and cushions are a must, of course! We’re also rather beguiled by the concept of outdoor rugs, just to add a bit of comfort to hard tiles. This furniture set is the Alps Compact Dining Set from Dobbie’s. Get a similar look for your terrace with our Icon Wood Effect Porcelain Tiles which, of course, are suitable for outdoor use. And they need no upkeep or sealing – happy days!

The Details in the Décor

Patterns, plants, macramé and throws…all put together to  create a cosy and comfy boho-festival vibe, and illustrated here to perfection with a eclectic selection of accessories, from Hilary & Flo  This is a quirky summer house, but we must admit this has got us thinking about creating a similar look in the new shed –  and which might be a little more budget-friendly than a full-on summer house. However, the multiple pattern theme can be easily replicated, both indoors and out, with some of our patterned tiles, such as Victorian Centro Budapest for indoors, and Haven Creek for outdoors.

Outdoor Ambience

Sometimes it’s a bit of a gamble when having outdoor parties and gatherings, we’re always torn between buying industrial quantities of paper plates or using the nice stuff and not worrying too much. So one of our go-to places is Sainsbury’s for colourful crockery and table accessories – it’s great value and not so pricey that we’re going to get tooooo worried if anything gets damaged. Anyway, if you’re prepping for any kind of summer party, keep the food simple and easy to do – putting effort into how the décor looks and the overall ambience is a bit of a cheat, but you don’t need to spend hours preparing gourmet nibbles for a crowd, save the fancy catering for smaller, intimate gatherings!

Bohemian Picnics

Making an effort with a picnic – especially if it’s a big family gathering or trip to an outdoor concert – will pay off. The creator will be the star of the show, and once again, presentation is everything! It can still be sandwiches and nibbles, but packed into gorgeous containers and with a few lovely cushions thrown in, memories of sandwiches stuffed into plastic bags and squashed crisps will disappear. All of these lovely items are from Wilko, none will break the bank, and will be a fab addition to your outdoor dining space at home too.

Make It Comfy

We couldn’t resist featuring a glimpse of some gorgeous cushions from Sofology, makers of fab sofas in beautiful colours and funky patterns; great for adding a bohemian, casual-comfy look to your interiors. In fact, the epitome of  bohemian-festival chic needs to combine patterns and colours – whether it’s for interiors, exteriors or clothing!

Indoors-Outdoors-Style

OK, so painting your outdoor rendering terracotta-orange may be a little extreme, but it’s a cracking idea if you really want to make an outdoor style statement. In fact this outdoor space looks so appealing and welcoming that we’re am going to recommend some exterior paint to recreate this look. Try Red Earth Exterior Masonry Paint by Farrow & Ball. It would also work beautifully as a contrast to low-key exterior terrace tiles, such as our Morvan Outdoor Slabs in porcelain, which replicate the look of real stone – without any upkeep of course.

Hanging In & Out

We think that for an indoor scheme, the ultimate boho-look is thoroughly nailed if the room features a hanging chair. One of the nicest is this one, which is the Broste-Copenhagen Lot chair from Nest. It would be great for an open-air terrace too, perhaps consider adding an awning or sail shade for the ultimate in laid-back festival vibes.

Happy Extras

Get that casual-festival-boho vibe with some textured accessories with a natural look; all these are from Monsoon Home. From left; Macramé mirror; Happy Place cushion and  Striped Fringed & Sequinned cushion. What’s not to like?

And Finally

If you’re planning a relaxing, quirky, bohemian-style room, take a look at some of our vintage-style tiles. Some of our favourites are, from left: a blue tile from the Sintra Patterned range, Riga Patchwork, and a grey variant of Sintra Patterned. The Sintra range comprises 20+ possible surface designs and colours, with each box containing a random number of pattern and colour variants from those available, making it perfect to recreate that weather-beaten, shabby chic style.
