Burns Night: How To Create Caledonian-Inspired Interiors

We’ve been looking at various suggestions and ideas for celebrating Burns Night, which of course falls on 25 January; and have been inspired to look at some very traditional Scottish-themed interior ideas, all of which look great when teamed with rugged, natural-looking floor tiles.

Check It Out

On the off chance that you do fancy a Burns Night re-vamp, we couldn’t resist a peek at this tartan-inspired wallpaper, from Mind The Gap, who can supply outrageous wallpaper designs throughout pretty much the whole world. We rather liked this one, teamed here with a great selection of stag-inspired decorative objects. Pair with some tough, natural stone effect tiles, such as our Bayona Grey porcelain large format tiles, which would look at home in a Scottish castle too…

Grand Style

Caledonian-inspired interiors makes us think about comfy, tartan or leather-clad armchairs, alongside cosy fires and wood panelling. Consider stone or wood effect tiles for similar style, underfloor heating is well worth thinking about too. Most porcelain floor tiles can be installed with underfloor heating, and our Rural distressed wood effect tiles fit this theme perfectly. The chair is upholstered with pure wool check fabric from the Elemental Collection by Abraham Moons & Co

In The Dark

Get out your dark-themed cushions and throws to add Scottish style to your interiors – checks and plaids are classic, won’t date, and will look good for years to come. Shown here, Arts & Crafts Indigo cushion and curtain fabric, and Summer Fruits Indigo for the throw, all from ILIV.

Practical Plaids…

Plaid and check fabrics can be considered as good investments; with simple styling and classic choices for walls and floors, check upholstery will add longevity to your interior schemes. Traditional Choices

Pressing on with our recommendations for floor tiles that will enhance a very traditional scheme; take a look at three of the best from Tile Mountain. Left, parquet-style Kanna Ceniza porcelain tiles with the appearance of wooden parquet tiles; Centre, Jardins porcelain tiles with anti-slip properties, which would be a very good choice for an entrance hall or porch; and Saja floor tiles with a moulded Victorian-style appearance. Rather interesting for a Gothic-style look when teamed with eclectic accessories…

Highland Styling

Just to show that you don’t have to go completely overboard to get a bit of a highland fling into the bedroom, Voyage Maison make custom headboards, as well as cushions and accessories. We’re rather fond of the firm’s thistle and plaid scatter cushions, as well as the buttoned headboard. A great way of accessorising carefully, rather than going completely over the top with a particular theme.

A Tartan Flourish

A quick tartan flourish can be added to your floor tiles with the Glen Kilry rug in tartan Tan by Modern Rugs. Rugs can be added as defining spots of colour or to help pin down a decorative theme once your colour scheme (which is primarily the colour of your walls and floor) is established.

All Pile On…

This cosy-looking sofa is the new Stane Street from Sofas & Stuff, and shows perfectly how a traditional shape and style and be re-invented in different colours and fabrics – just like our tiles, which can adapt and work with all kinds of interiors, from super-contemporary to very traditional. We love the way this can be styled with sleek tiles; to get a similar look, try our Extreme Porcelain Tiles.

Traditional Tastes

Well we couldn’t leave you in suspense for the 25 January without a look at a haggis for Burns Night Supper. Several of us on the Tile Mountain team are planning to take a trip to Waitrose, and if you’re a Burns Night novice, take a look at suggestions from the BBC Good Food website, which is totally reliable in such matters!

And Finally… Treat Time

Spiced Hot Chocolate, from a recipe by M&S, shouldn’t be confined just to January, should it. Sounds like a perfect winter afternoon pick-me-up when it’s all cold and dreary outside!

All the team here at Tile Mountain wish you a very happy Burns Night. If you’re planning on your own celebration in honour of the bard of Ayrshire then do send us your pics  @TileMountainUK or on Instagram!
