Christmas Decoration Inspiration: Room By Room

If you haven’t put the Christmas decs up yet, this is the week to do it! Yes, we know it seems to be getting earlier and earlier each year, but a couple of weeks before the big day is perfectly acceptable (although we’re firmly in the ‘any earlier than December is scandalous’ camp!). If you’ve recently completed an interior overhaul and want some advice on how to match your festive decorations to your interiors, or perhaps you’re just looking for inspiration, read on as we bring you a room by room guide to decorating your interiors in readiness for Santa’s imminent arrival!

In the Kitchen

As usual, there’s far too much choice around. We love the idea of a single colour theme (white and crystal/glass FTW!) but it’s easy to ramp up the colour themes with an extra splash of colour here and there. Or you could just go full-on 1970s with absolutely every single decoration, paper chain, length of tinsel and lantern you can find in the loft put on display! If you have a lovely spacious kitchen-dining space, this of course is the perfect opportunity to double up on Xmas trees – one for the hallway or living room, and one for the kitchen. This classic green faux tree is from an excellent range at Next Home, it’s a great choice and sits well against dark kitchen cabinetry and floor tiles. (Have a look at our Nature Black Slate for a similar effect).

In The Hall

This theme features stags on the wrapping paper – don’t forget that fake (or real) presents wrapped up in the aforementioned themed paper are perfect for pinning down a colour scheme or particular ‘look’. Gather up your tartan accessories and any appropriate wild-life adornments and create a rather elegant and classic look for a hall or entrance porch. Tree, decorations and wrap are from this year’s seasonal offerings at Sainsburys.

Up the Wooden Hill

We’re rather impressed with these creative ideas – simply pair up a couple of mini-trees for a unique look, especially if you can’t face the trek to get a floor to ceiling one stuffed into the car and thence home! Continue the green theme up the staircase with a faux garlands wound around the handrails; a pretty idea which can continue through the rest of the upstairs rooms. Excellent floor tiles too – for a similar look try our Vintage Wood-Effect Porcelain tiles, or our Baltimore Wood-Effect Floor Tiles.

Simply Elegant

If you haven’t got surface space, dislike clutter, and want to keep decorations to a simple minimum, then invest in some indoor festive wreaths … they’re not just for the front door, and can create a ‘feature’ wall in a plain room – a great idea for the dining room, especially if you need to streamline to accommodate extra guests – wall decs take up next to no space at all. Take a look at the options available from Marks & Spencer, but don’t forget that your local high street independent traders, markets and even the local green-grocer will also be pretty well stocked up with a great variety of fresh wreaths. Otherwise, DIY versions with greenery from the garden will look impressive if you’re feeling creative.

Minimal and Stylish

You don’t have to go all-out glitter and tinsel to maintain a clean, pared-down Xmas look. Of course it helps to start off with a chic, uncluttered house in the first place. But a touch of greenery, some black table linen and thoughtful details will still look festive. We’ve been rather inspired by these chic looks from a big selection at  Debenhams.

Going for Gold

There’s a big trend for crazy decorations this year – everything from chocolate bars to dinosaurs, fruit, vegetables and flamingos have been re-imagined into bonkers Xmas decs! Good old M&S has, as usual, done a sterling job on this concept, as has Paperchase and Rex London. Oh, and we rather like the white/gold themes from Dunelm too!

Xmas Dreams

Add some festive decorations to all rooms in the home – bedrooms are an easy project; there are lots of Christmas-themed bedding sets around, plus a headboard and bedside table can be spruced up in no time. Think garlands and fairy lights along the headboard, plus a mini-tree on the side tables. All items here are from Debenhams.

Clashing Brights

Ok, so if your home is white, bright and minimalist you may feel like livening it up for the festive season…so why not go for all the clashing bright colours available? We love this interpretation by Debenhams, with plenty of scope for including all the mis-matched decorations you can gather up.

Final Touches

A couple of good ideas for quick decorative fixes … firstly, it’s always worth splashing out on paper plates for parties, save the dishwasher space for the posh glassware and serving plates. We rather like these Festive Llama Plates, from Luck & Luck; the retro-style honeycomb hanging decorations from Talking Tables can be carefully packed away and used for the next celebratory occasion. These black and gold Party Porcelain paper plates, also from Talking Tables will add a touch of glam to both Christmas and New Years Eve parties too.
