Customer Tile Style Profile: Ellie’s Bathroom Refresh

Our Customer Tile Style Profile feature takes an in-depth look at some of the fantastic renovation and redesign projects our customers complete using products from the Tile Mountain range. This month’s instalment sees us catching up with Ellie Amici of Derby who used our Underground White tiles to expand and jazz up a dated bathroom…

What were the circumstances behind the project?

I bought the house five years ago and the bathroom was the only room left to renovate. It was a big job as I had two separate rooms, both of which were really dated and decorated in different styles. I made them into a single bigger room and changed the shower for a shower/bath.

Was your choice of decor & colour scheme influenced by the tiles you chose, or did you pick the tiles to fit in with a style you’d chosen for the rest of the room?

I was long undecided between modern and traditional but I wanted to make a bit of a feature of the wall in front of the door. When I found the cabinet and the shelves I liked the decision was easily made. Due to the traditional style I only wanted underground tiles in white. The wall colour was inspired by Dulux’s little paint booklets – I thought the green went well with the grey and the light peach made the room warm and went well with the floor.

What made you decide that the tiles you chose were the right tiles for your project?

I think underground tiles are really good for a traditional look and the grey grout also complemented the industrial elements. Every time I look at them I’m very pleased and I don’t think that I will ever get tired of them – they are just a classic!

How long did the project take to complete and did you do the tiling yourself or hire a professional tiler?

It took three weeks because my builder, who is really great, kind and patient (thanks Gav!), had to coordinate different tradesmen. I also have a little WC utility room that I could use whilst the work was going on, so there was not too much pressure for them to finish. Everything was ripped out and rebuilt to a high standard and it was worth the wait.

What part of the project was most difficult and why?

The most difficult part was having to choose everything online because of Covid. Samples helped for tiles and floor but for the units it was a bit of a gamble. Even though most DIY retailers’ websites have many photos there are aspects you can only appreciate when you see and touch something up close. Some purchases went well (lovely and comfortable bath), some not so well (tiny sink and poor vanity unit).

Do you have any further decorating projects lined up?

I need to finish the decorating in the bathroom to make it as nice as possible, but it’s just some more shelves or a cabinet, and a Victorian painted feature on the plain wall. Then some other painting jobs in other rooms that I can do myself.

What advice would you give to people considering undertaking a similar project?

If possible, go to showrooms and have a good look at things. I found that having tiles and floor samples to place in the room also helped a lot. I was a bit put off by changing the shower for a bath as it seems that everybody is going the other way nowadays. It’s true that showers are more comfortable with a cabin but I love having a bath, so this is better for me.

What would you say to people who are thinking about buying tiles from Tile Mountain?

Tile Mountain’s service is really good and the tiles are great value. Everything arrived on time and well packed and the delivery person was very kind and helpful. The professional tiler couldn’t believe they were such a bargain and thought the quality was excellent. I was also delighted when my picture got chosen and I received the twenty pounds voucher, what a nice treat. Thank you!
