Customer Tile Style Profile: Fergus’ Roof-Terrace Refresh

Our Customer Tile Style Profile feature takes an in-depth look at some of the fantastic renovation and redesign projects our customers complete using products from the Tile Mountain range. This month’s instalment features Fergus of McKay of Gourock, Scotland, who used our Terrazzo Grey Outdoor Porcelain Slab Tiles to wondrous effect when revamping his sea-view roof terrace. We caught up with him to chat about the project…

What were the circumstances behind the project?

Our garage roof was leaking and had a deck terrace on top of it.  We decided to replace the deck with something lower maintenance and that could give access to the roof below if required.

Was your choice of decor & colour scheme influenced by the tiles you chose, or did you pick the tiles to fit in with a style you’d chosen for the rest of the project?

We opted for the colour first and foremost as it’s grey and wouldn’t show up dirt!

What made you decide that the tiles you chose were the right tiles for your project?

We were looking for something that was suitable for outdoors and that could be installed using Adjustable Support Pedestals, so that pushed us in the direction of  20mm thick porcelain slab tiles.

How long did the project take to complete and did you do the tiling yourself or hire a professional tiler?

The laying of the tiles on pedestals was very quick.  It took about a day to lay the whole tiles and another day to cut and lay the outer tiles..

What part of the project was most difficult and why?

The most difficult part of the project was finding something to cut the tiles.  Eventually we hired a wet wheel tile cutter, but even then they took 4 or 5 passes to cut.

Do you have any further decorating projects lined up?

No more projects at the moment.

What advice would you give to people considering undertaking a similar project?

Laying the tiles on pedestals was very easy and quick. I would advise anyone considering it just to go for it.  It is relatively simple to keep them level and they look great when complete.

What would you say to people who are thinking about buying tiles from Tile Mountain?

Tile mountain were great. The tiles were delivered quickly on pallets (and at a good price too!).
