Customer Tile Style Profile: Fleur’s Fantastic Bathroom Facelift

Our Customer Tile Style Profile feature takes an in-depth look at some of the fantastic renovation and redesign projects our customers complete using products from the Tile Mountain range. This month saw us catch up with Fleur Brennan of Osgodby who used our Carrara White Gloss Marble Effect tiles to breathe some new life into a tired family bathroom…

What were the circumstances behind the project?

We wanted to create an en-suite to our master bedroom so decided to split our large family bathroom into two separate rooms. What you see is our new family bathroom which takes up about two thirds of the original room.

Was your choice of decor & colour scheme influenced by the tiles you chose, or did you pick the tiles to fit in with a style you’d chosen for the rest of the room?

We wanted to create a ‘hotel bathroom’, clean lines, clutter-free, with some practical storage. I found a design tool on a bathroom website and played around with a few ideas. This was super helpful as I could visualise the whole thing and make sure I could fit everything in. I then spent ages shopping around to get the things I wanted for the best price. In the end I couldn’t find the storage I wanted so I created my own shelving next to the sink unit which was deep enough to take folded towels and lots of other bathroom stuff!

What made you decide that the tiles you chose were the right tiles for your project?

We saw some marble tiles in a hotel in Paris and they looked stunning. I wanted the same look but couldn’t afford the real thing. We shopped around a number of tile retailers and couldn’t find what we were looking for at the right price. I saw a few tiles I liked on the Tile Mountain website and got a few samples before I decided to go for these. I have to say I thought the price was unbelievable – one of the cheapest styles on offer. Everyone has commented saying the tiles look high end and expensive though –  I’m so pleased with how they look – the large format and gloss finish help make the room look bigger and brighter.

How long did the project take to complete and did you do the tiling yourself or hire a professional tiler?

I did the whole project myself so it did take longer. We have another bathroom downstairs though so we weren’t in too much of a hurry. The tiles were easy to work with – they cut easily with a large tile cutter and I used an angle grinder with a tile disc for tricky cut-outs. I took my time to make sure I got everything just how I wanted it. Tile Mountain recommended the grout colour which was perfect and I was able to get silicone in the same colour too to finish it off.

What part of the project was most difficult and why?

We live in an old house so the walls aren’t exactly straight. This meant I had one or two issues with fitting the tiles flush but I think the finished product looks ok (to the untrained eye!).

Do you have any further decorating projects lined up?

Yes,  I’ve now got to move on to the aforementioned en-suite. Just about to order my tiles for that – I’m going for Doblo Grey Polished Porcelain throughout, so a dark, glossy theme. We’ll let you know how we get on!

What advice would you give to people considering undertaking a similar project?

Go for it. May be get a professional in if you don’t have the time or patience to do it yourself but it’s very rewarding and we have managed to save a lot of money doing it ourselves.

What would you say to people who are thinking about buying tiles from Tile Mountain?

I wouldn’t hesitate. You can get as many samples as you need, very cheaply – even full tiles (which is what we did). This means you can be absolutely sure of what you want. The tiles, adhesive and grout arrived on a pallet within a couple of days and delivered exactly where I wanted them. There were no breakages, everything was well packaged and secure. Overall, the service was second to none and I am looking forward to getting some more tiles for my en-suite. Might need some more advice on grout colour though!
