Our Customer Tile Style Profile feature takes a closer look at some of the amazing renovation and redesign projects our customers undertake using products from the Tile Mountain range. This month’s edition sees us catching up with Mike and Julia Page of Nottinghamshire who created a wonderful open-plan kitchen/dining and living areas using our large Dunsen Grey anti-slip floor tiles.
What were the circumstances behind the project?
When we purchased our bungalow two years ago, it originally had a large conservatory which was extremely hot in the summer and cold in the winter. We really wanted to make the most of the view and ‘bring the garden and view’ into our home. We felt an open-plan living scheme would provide this, whether we were cooking, dining, or relaxing.
Was your choice of decor & colour scheme influenced by the tiles you chose, or did you pick the tiles to fit in with a style you’d chosen for the rest of the room?
We decided to have underfloor heating installed and porcelain tiles were the best option. The tiles needed to be suitable for both internal and external use. As raised terrace has been built at the same height as the bungalow floor and the tiles will run seamlessly outside, this will enable us to open the large sliding doors and enjoy alfresco living (weather permitting). The completion of the external tiling has been put on hold until spring 2019 due to time delays and going into winter.
What made you decide that the tiles you chose were the right tiles for your project?
The Dunsen Grey tiles suited our colour scheme. We wanted large tiles to give clean lines and to be in proportion to the size of the extension. The light mottled effect of the tiles blend beautifully with our furniture and kitchen units.
How long did the project take to complete and did you do the tiling yourself or hire a professional tiler?
The whole building project took approximately 20 weeks. We were extremely lucky with the weather, as it was a long hot summer and the build went well. The flooring is a large area and we understood the need to find a professional tiler. We had a tiler recommended to us who was meticulous in the preparation and laying of the tiles.
What part of the project was most difficult and why?
The most difficult part of the project was living without the kitchen for two and half weeks – washing up in the bathroom sink, eating microwave and takeaway meals!
Do you have any further decorating projects lined up?
We are now enjoying the open plan living and watching the seasons change from the comfort of our new extension. We are already planning a remodel of the family bathroom, which will be fully tiled. We will of course use Tile Mountain again.
What advice would you give to people considering undertaking a similar project?
When considering a large project a good builder is essential. Set out your expectations from the beginning and be clear on the budget and have a contingency fund. As for Tile Mountain, the tiles we chose are good quality at a good price.
What would you say to people who are thinking about buying tiles from Tile Mountain?
