Customer Tile Style Profile: Ruth’s Bathroom Revamp

Our Customer Tile Style Profile feature takes an in-depth look at some of the fantastic renovation and redesign projects our customers complete using products from the Tile Mountain range. This month saw us catch up with Ruth Nixon of Stoke on Trent who used our Apollo Hexagon Black tiles to completely revamp the bathroom of her and her husband’s recently purchased home…

What were the circumstances behind the project?

We purchased the house last year and every room needed renovating. It was very old fashioned and grubby. We had a baby in August and as she is getting bigger, we wanted a nice area for bath time. As all the other main rooms had already been brought up to scratch this was our next project.

Was your choice of décor & colour scheme influenced by the tiles you chose, or did you pick the tiles to fit in with a style you’d chosen for the rest of the room/space?

We looked on Instagram for different ideas – I had always liked hexagon tiles and thought that they offered something a bit different. We saw a number of design ideas which had black hexagon tiles used in conjunction with a wood but couldn’t decide whether to take the risk on a such a bold design so we decided to only tile half way up the walls so the room didn’t end up too dark. The wood elements were picked to go with the tiles so as to add a little bit of warmth to the room with it being black and white.

What made you decide that the tiles you chose were the right tiles for your project?

We ordered a sample from Tile Mountain and as soon as we saw it in the room, we knew it was right. It was big enough to create the effect we wanted but not too big that you couldn’t see the hexagon shapes with the bath. Our tiler commented on how good and durable the tiles were. I had pitched the design scheme idea to my husband by showing him photos on Instagram – I just had to convince him as he is quite traditional with his taste. However, it wasn’t hard to win him over as black and white are the colours of the team he supports!

We had looked at other tiles such as larger format square tiles, and more traditional looking ones like stone effect, but they would not have created the desired aesthetic. We wanted something different but modern and I think the Apollo range really fit in with the design scheme we had in mind. The plain black colour looks great with the white grout and white ceramics. We had used Tile Mountain previously when renovating our ensuite, downstairs loo, and our biggest projects; the utility, kitchen, and hallway. As such, we knew the quality, price and service was good.

How long did the project take to complete and did you do the tiling yourself or hire a professional tiler?

We had a tiler come in and complete the tiling for us. It took three and half days in total as we had a few cuts due to the corners in the room and also a bit of lining up to do. The tiler said it would take him four full days but he completed the job with a day to spare. Good going when you consider that the floor needed boarding first! The whole bathroom including plumbing, tiling, and decorating took approximately one week to complete.

What part of the project was most difficult and why?

The most difficult part was trying to visualise the finished look but we’re extremely pleased that we opted for the tiles that we did as the end results look amazing. So many people have commented on our pictures to say how nice it is. The tiler said the window tiling was a bit tricky and slightly difficult to get it all lined up but he did a great job. He also said it was one of his favourite projects that he’d done recently!

Do you have any further projects lined up?

Yes! Now the family bathroom is complete, we have another bedroom, landing, and stairs. Then the back garden is going to be our summer project. For the garden we are thinking of using slab tiles. I love the Concretia and Maverick ranges that Tile Mountain stocks. You can see how our renovation projects have progressed since we bought the property over on our Instagram account @nixonsattudorrose.

What advice would you give to people considering undertaking a similar project?

Go for it! If you have a certain design idea or look you want, don’t let anyone try and change your mind or you won’t be happy with the end result. You should also plan ahead and make sure you have all the supplies needed for your project before tradesmen arrive to avoid delays.

What would you say to people who are thinking about buying tiles from Tile Mountain?

Do it – you will not regret it! The tiles are such good value – high quality at a great price. They have so much choice, so many styles and are always happy to offer advice on everything from design ideas to recommendations of grouts, adhesives, and tools you might need for your project. I wouldn’t shop anywhere else for tiles.
