How to Add Colour to Your Bathroom

For many of us, the bathroom is a sanctuary – a place where we start and end our days, a place where we care for our bodies as well as our minds. During this summer’s heatwave, we might blast ourselves with a cooling shower before bed, or decide to have a bit of ‘me time’ away from the pressures of family life with a long soak in the bath alongside a glass of wine. If your bathroom, however, feels less like the perfect escape and more just a place to ‘do your business’ then get out quickly, you might be thinking of ways to bring a little more personality and life into this utilitarian space.

Most of us know that colours affect us psychologically – yellow brings us joy, shades of blue and green calm and relax us, and orange and red can make us feel energetic or more creative. However, for bathrooms, we tend to opt for more neutral designs for a few reasons; we see neutral spaces as more relaxing, we view our interior designs as a good long-term option, or we think it’s better for resale value down the road. Indeed, these are all valid reasons, but adding colour to your bathroom may mean the difference between a boring or lacklustre space and one that makes us want to spend more time in it and that we’ll enjoy just that little bit more because it gives us a great feeling.

With all that in mind, we thought we’d share some of the ways that you might consider adding colour to your bathroom – some being permanent options and some more temporary, meaning you can swap it out to something different when the mood arises.

Adding Colour with Accessories

If your bathroom is already awash in neutral tones, one of the easiest ways to add a burst of colour is via accessories. Bold and bright or soft and subtle, you can inject life into the space via your towels and bathmats to set the tone for the entire space. Consider a bold navy blue mixed with touches of gold to give your space a glamorous Art Deco vibe as seen above.

Looking for a more romantic look? Your soap pump, tumblers or storage items can also add colour but stick with pastel hues like the soft pink glass accessories seen above for a tranquil effect in your bathroom. This is by far the easiest way to bring colour into your bathroom as many items can be picked up inexpensively and there is little financial investment required when it comes time to make a change; swap your accessories and give the room a whole new look however often you wish!

Adding Colour with Paint

If you are lucky enough to have a roll top bath in your space, why not paint it a bold hue as Sandra from @the_idle_hands has done in hers? You’ll note the walls and floors add a beautiful pattern but it’s the yellow tub that steals the show here. Consider choosing one stand-out item for wow-factor, to draw the eye and entice the senses without overwhelming the roomscape.

Feeling a little braver? Here’s a similar set-up with a bold patterned floor tile but the freestanding bathtub has been left in white and the walls have been given the paint treatment with a striking two-tone effect. Painting your walls is an easy way to give your bathroom a unique colour scheme. Of course, you’ll want to ensure you use paints that are suitable for the bathroom. Most paint manufacturers have specialist paints for kitchens and baths that are more durable in damp environments,  so keep an eye on your labels or ask for assistance when choosing paint products for your space.

Adding Colour With Tiles

Finally, for those who are feeling a bit braver and wish to give your bathroom a more permanent colour feature, tiles are a great way to invest in a colourful look at home. Try not to be swayed too much by the latest colour trends and consider those hues that are your tried-and-true favourites. Need a bit of inspiration for your best colour choices? Have a look at your wardrobe. We generally feel good in the colours we’re naturally drawn to and wear day to day.
