How to Add Colour to Your Garden

Whilst you may have been perfectly content to create a cosy nest indoors over the colder months, when the haze of winter finally lifts, you’ll probably find you have a strong desire to finally get some fresh air. Of course, there’s nowhere more comfortable to hang out than your own back garden, but if yours is looking a little worse for wear after winter, you’ll likely want to give it a little refresh.

Spring and summer are the best months for adding colour to your garden. When the sun is shining and is higher in the sky, colour is reflected back to our eyes in its truest form. Playing with bright or pastel colours in your garden design is a great way to take advantage of this and will combine perfectly with the array of planted flowers or greenery you may have.

These tips show you a few ways you can add colour to your garden design (and it’s easier than you think!).

Take a (Colourful) Seat

If your wood furniture is starting to look a bit worse for wear, consider breathing new life into it with a bold splash of paint. Cuprinol make a wide range of paints specifically meant for the garden and, in terms of colours and finishes, the only limit is your imagination. Go for contrasting brights or more muted pastels for a welcoming look, perfect for long lazy days in the sunshine.

Paint Your Fencing

Surround yourself with the joy of colour by experimenting with bold new shades for your garden fencing. We love the way the greenery contrasts so vividly against this deep indigo fencing but it would work equally well in other shades. Why not try out a soft sage green, a bold turquoise or even a blush pink?

Add a Colourful Plant Pot

With the explosion of house plants as a trend over recent years, there is no shortage of colourful plant pots on the market right now. We particularly like the retro quality of the Orla Kiely range, but if you can’t find the exact shade you require, consider painting your existing pots in colours that match your garden scheme.

Colour Through Textiles

If you know you’ll be enjoying your garden for the day or into the early evening, consider adding bright and colourful cushions to your garden seating. You’ll want to look out for fabrics that are made for outdoor use which will assure that the colours won’t fade in the sun and will dry quickly after the odd rain shower. In our climate, it’s more difficult to leave textiles out during the season so consider a few large tubs where textiles can be safely stored in the shed when the rain comes (and easily taken out again once the sun is shining).

Outdoor Rugs

Of course, you don’t want to forget what’s underfoot as well. Outdoor rugs are another trend we’ve seen in garden design recently – they’re great for adding a touch of pattern and colour as well as creating zones in your outdoor space. Made of polypropylene and recycled plastics, these are more hard-wearing than you might think. If they get dirty, simply wash down with a garden hose and they will be looking new again. You will want to take them inside during the winter months but they can withstand most of what our summers can throw at them.

Entertaining with Colour

Finally, summer usually calls for barbeques and garden entertaining so consider dressing up your outdoor tables with colourful melamine plate sets and plastic cups made to mimic your favourite glassware. Add a few finishing touches like fresh cut garden flowers and a few cushions for perfect entertaining style.
