Ultimate Combinations: How To Use Wallpaper With Tiles In The Bathroom

Yes, we know that bathrooms and wallpaper aren’t always the ideal combination. However, it’s perfect if you want intense colour and pattern as well as tiles, and – if done properly with adequate ventilation – is a very good design solution. Here are some of our favourite tiles + wallpaper ideas for your next decorative bathroom project…

The Green Team

The combination of wallpaper + tiles has been done well and carefully here. Any potential ‘splash’ area is fully protected by the tiles – splashback, counter-top and above-cabinet – so there’s very little danger of the wallpaper getting damp! Remember, vinyl wall coverings are more suited, but with a bit of care it’s easily possible to get away with high quality standard wallpaper in areas that aren’t going to get soaked, steamy or drippy. We love the use of our Village Emerald Green glossy ceramic wall tiles here – they come in a total of eleven fabulous colours in the 65mm x 200mm format, including Rose Gold and Teal, so there are plenty of opportunities for creative colour combinations!

The Pink & Green Dream

Here’s a couple of wall covering ideas to use with our Village Emerald Green Village ceramic tiles. The combination of pink and green is super-fashionable now, providing an element of warmth and natural vibes to interior schemes. Left; this is Islamorada in Pink, a non-woven paste-the-wall paper from 4Murs, which would look perfect in an en-suite scheme. Right; also from 4Murs, a rather more graphic design, this could be just right for a cloakroom we think! It’s called Stelvio and is also paste-the-wall, which does make it a doddle to hang …

Mono Magic

We’re really loving the colourful ideas at the moment, of course, but don’t want you to miss out on any black and white themes … such as the wonderful Plumage in Charcoal & Cream from Woodchip & Magnolia. This is a striking, intricate design (which also comes in bright colour options) that adds a sophisticated edge to a straightforward white tile and basin setting. Try adding black taps and using black or grey grout for a graphic, monochromatic look. And naturally, our Metro White Matt tiles are perfect here, alongside our Mapei Ultracolour Grout, available in Black and Anthracite.

Colour With Confidence

Here are just three of the amazing colours in our Village range; from left, Rose Gold, the aforementioned Emerald, and the soothing Azure, a very appealing sky blue that would work well in a cloakroom or utility alongside wallpaper.

Under The Sea…

Sometimes we come across a wallpaper so perfect for a bathroom that it becomes imperative to recommend it to absolutely everyone we know who is embarking on any kind of bathroom project that just might possibly need a panel of wallpaper! This is one such instance, and it’s Rockpools in Blue, also available in Sand, Teal, Shell and Coral, by designer Fiona Howard. We like the combination of blue and natural shades of wood – and suggest tiled flooring too, perhaps using our Kanna Ceniza Wood Effect Floor Tiles.

Beautiful Blues

And here’s another suggestion for a blue-themed bathroom scheme, this is our classic Hanoi Star Blue porcelain floor tile – a perfect companion tile to blue-themed wallcoverings such as a Toile de Jouy design, Lazy Sunday from World of Wallpaper.

Perfect Pooches

So we’re joining in with the ever-increasing obsession with dogs, partly fuelled by lockdown-puppy purchases and partly because there are so many dog-themed things to buy out there in online shopping land! However, this is a new favourite, from Catherine Rowe Designs, it’s the cute and quirky China Dogs in Turquoise wallpaper, shown here in a pretty bathroom setting. Measure carefully however as it’s made to order and sold in both 3m and 9m rolls. We would suggest our Doblo Cream Polished Porcelain floor tiles to anchor that vivid colour scheme with a simple neutral base.

Design Details

The secret to combining wallpaper and tiles successfully in a bathroom is to be bold and positive. There are plenty of plain, coloured and subtle tiles available in our ranges, so it’s a case of feeling brave and adventurous and investing in probably just a single roll of ‘wow’ wallpaper to make your bathroom, en-suite, or cloakroom stand out. From left; Electric Lagoon in Blue; Zellandine in Aqua; and Tiana Nouveau in Antique, all from The Curious Department.

Gorgeous Greys

Well, we can imagine this rather lovely grey-themed set up as an en-suite bathroom, perhaps leading into a super-luxe bedroom with pearl-grey velvet furniture and a view through tall windows with voile drapes gently filtering the sunlight! This fabulous Savuti Wallpaper from the Ardmore Collection by Cole & Son is currently on sale at Limelace, and could be a cheeky late-summer treat to perk up your bathroom plans…

And Finally…

If you’re going down the grey base-tile route before adding some crazy colour and pattern in the way of wallpaper, take a look at our stunning Bayona Grey large format floor tiles – a very effective way of creating a plain, dark backdrop for elaborate wall choices and a lot easier to maintain than the natural stone that they effortlessly emulate.
