Inspired by Bonfire Night: Dark Walls with Bright Colours and Metallic Finishes

There are very few people who can not look at a night sky bursting with the radiance and glow of fireworks and not embrace their inner child with wide eyes and plenty of ‘ooohs’ and ‘ahhs’. Bonfire Night can be an enjoyable family outing for both young and old and watching the cracking of fireworks in the night sky fills us with childlike wonderment.

One thing you may not realise is that inspiration for interiors is everywhere. We enjoy the beauty of Bonfire Night with blazing fires and bright shots of light glistening against the dark and we can use that inspirational look for our own homes. There’s been a big trend in recent years for expanses of darker walls, punctuated – just like a firework in the night sky – with touches of metallic gold or bright colours.

The beauty of using dark colours in your interiors is that just about anything you put against it will really pop against that dark background. It can completely change the entire look and feel of a room simply with a change to a darker shade.

If you fancy embracing the dark side, we thought we’d provide some ideas for creating this look in your own home, using Bonfire Night as our inspiration to share spaces that utilise darker background paint colours with pops of light in metallic or bold shades that work beautifully alongside them.

One of the easiest ways to add a burst of fireworks-style light to a darkly painted wall is by stringing festoon or fairy lights indoors. Thankfully, these are not just for Christmas decoration and, as long as you stick with warm or clear white bulbs, you can use them as soon as the days begin to draw in.

String them along the tops of shelves, surfaces, your fireplace mantle or around a mirror for a twinkling effect which will enrich dark wall colours and create a warm glowing atmosphere in your space.

You can also look out for wallpapers with darker backgrounds and metallic patterns. We love the deep burgundy background of this wallpaper from Arthouse – the metallic gold elephant print really comes to life when combined with brass accents in the furniture. The metallic gold print against a darker background creates a more traditional feel while still feeling very current for that perfect blend of old and new.

If you’re feeling a little braver, consider painting out your bathroom walls in a striking black paint but bring in a traditional sense of glamour with a free-standing white bathtub, ornate gold mirror and gold accessories which bounce light around the space – just like fireworks!

Speaking of luxurious bathrooms, if you are considering a more contemporary take on the black and gold style, look no further than our striking Strauss black porcelain tiles. Featuring a glazed finish, they’ll reflect light around your space and look particularly striking in combination with gold hardware, emphasising a high-end look.

Rich navy blue can also act as a reminder of the beauty of an October night and in combination with bold metallic finishes, creates a glamorous look that’s both fun and inviting. For that perfect contrast, combine this colour with other shades of blue and layer your space with plenty of texture in faux fur and velvet to add depth to a darker space.
