As the year draws to a close, we look back fondly on 2018 to the tile trends even we never saw coming. Their popularity is surely a sign of things to come so if you’re considering a new look in your home this year, why not consider some of these trail-blazing trends for 2019 as well? Here are just a few of our favourites that broke the mould…
Outdoor Tiles
Many of us enjoyed an unseasonably dry and sunny summer and with that, more of us decided to invest in whatever outdoor space we were lucky enough to have. Whether it was a small patio or a grand courtyard, the use of tiles outside became more popular than ever.
It’s little wonder the humble tile should prove a hit when there are now so many options available. Many chose to use the same tile both indoors and out to create a seamless look with bi-fold doors or decided to create a Mediterranean-inspired oasis with a bold pattern. Much more durable than decking and more attractive than simple paving slabs, outdoor tiles allowed us to create stunning outside rooms. From patterns to wood-effect, the selection is more exciting than ever.
Dark Tiles
With darker interiors such a huge hit over recent years, we shouldn’t have been surprised when we started seeing so many embracing the dark side. Black and dark grey tiles were more popular than ever before, breaking the norm of ‘light and bright rooms’ with rooms that are mysterious, engaging and – dare we say – just a little bit sexy.
This trend for darker interiors doesn’t seem to be losing any popularity for next year either. If the use of black or dark grey seems a bit too bold for you, you may want to look at the darker end of the colour spectrum instead – from deep blues to dark green, tiles in deeper shades will make a head-turning statement in your home.
Statement Flooring
As maximalism and a more-is-more approach to decor embraced our nation, so did those looking for tiles that gave them a bit more excitement than the usual natural and neutral designs. Patterned tiles were used everywhere to create wow-factor looks in kitchens, bathrooms, conservatories, hallways and beyond with a patterned tile floor being one of the biggest looks of the last year.
With so many different looks available, there’s a patterned tile for nearly any style out there. Why not try a geometric tile for a twist on modern design, embrace a more traditional pattern for your period property or bring a little of the continent home with you from your holidays with a Mediterranean-style tile?
Reclaimed Wood Effect Tiles
With tiles now the perfect foil for wood flooring, it’s become easier than ever to get the look of real wood in your home with something that’s more practical and more durable. For those who love a more rustic or traditional look in their homes, tiles which mimic reclaimed wood were another popular style that took us by surprise.
All the beauty of authentically distressed wood without any of the hassle of cleaning, sanding, staining or sealing, wood-effect tiles continue to create the rustic look we crave easily without the worry of splinters or woodworm!
