Traditional Floors: Easy Ways to Great Wood Looks

A wood (or wood-look) floor is highly desirable, and is a choice that will anchor a colour scheme; wood looks are generally neutral but interesting, often have texture, and can work within virtually any style of decorating scheme. Here are some of our vinyl and porcelain favourites, along with some gorgeous suggestions for accessories…

Chic Chevrons

The perfect minimalist white kitchens, however glamorous, would end up looking like an operating theatre if it had a white tiled floor. A favourite interior design trick is to specify a contrasting floor – not just in colour, but in material. So; team white gloss cabinets with textured ‘wood’ flooring. Our Country Nut porcelain floor tiles can be installed diagonally to create a very traditional parquet look, have a matt, wood-grained finish – ideal for a hard-working kitchen.

Practical Parquet Looks

Parquet is such a traditional look – hugely popular and extremely practical. In a modern space it adds a traditional element, and in homes with a more classic or relaxed feel it emphasises a timeless look. Kanna Ceniza are wood-effect porcelain tiles that can easily be mistaken for authentic wood – but without a huge price-tag and with all the advantages of easy-cleaning and low-maintenance.

Vintage Values

We love the contrasting looks here … the cool, vintage-style reclaimed wood effect porcelain tiles from our Vintage range in porcelain. If you’re looking for a worn, wood-look tile to replicate  traditional boards, these are the ones (and without the hassle of stripping, sanding, repairing and staining!). There are several furniture ranges around at the moment which feature worn or distressed wood, take a look at the Reclaimed collections from Barker & Stonehouse.

Big Ideas to Compliment Traditional Wood Floors

Three lovely ideas to get your pulse racing, these items are classics in the making and will look just perfect with wood-look floors. From left; the Consec bar stool from Cult Furniture comes in Black Faux leather and Copper finish, centre; The Merida chair is reminiscent of a classic wing chair, and will work in period and contemporary settings … it’s from the recent Plus + range by Content by Terence Conran. Right; the Hatton bar/kitchen stool in Walnut, also available in a painted Black or Grey finishes, also from Cult Furniture.

You Catch Our Drift?

We can visualise these amazing Driftwood porcelain tiles laid throughout a stylish home – living room, kitchen, dining space, family areas, porch, hall – they would look perfect everywhere and keep a neutral, grounded base for any other furnishing and accessories. Also suitable for walls – perhaps for a Scandi-style spa bathroom!

For the Floor… and Walls Too!

Not quite ‘log cabin’ but definitely ‘sophisticated spa’ style here, these Country Khaki wood-look porcelain tiles are so realistic that you could actually believe that they are real timber. Also available in Honey and Nut colour variations. Using these would create an amazing traditional wood look with all the low-maintenance and style advantages of porcelain.

Extra Inspiration

We’ve found a couple of ideas to expand the design and colour schemes we’re exploring this week … From left; the Calvin Mustard Yellow Velvet and Linen Armchair from Aitkin & Thyme. Centre; Vibe brassware in a gorgeous matt black finish. Shown here as a basin mixer, also available as a black freestanding bath shower mixer and a wall-mounted basin mixer set, from Frontline Bathrooms. Right; Another option from our very own Kanna range of porcelain tiles, this is the Nogal colour option, also available in Ceniza and Natural.

And Finally…

Real walnut flooring is generally eye-wateringly costly, but thankfully we can offer a fabulous alternative…this is Norfolk Walnut, from our LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) range, all products from which feature an easy angle-fit-click installation system, needing no adhesive. Perhaps a good starting point for beginner DIY-ers on their first home project! For further info, click here for some helpful tips.
