Trend Watch: Bohemian Style Bathrooms

Sleek, smart bathrooms may be common but if all those harder surfaces leave you with a bathroom that feels a bit cold or devoid of personality, there is plenty you can do to create something completely unique. The bohemian style, often identified by textiles in contrasting artisan textures, vintage pieces and a proliferation of plant life is a popular look that doesn’t have to be confined to a living room or bedroom. If it’s a style you enjoy in other areas of your home, then bringing that look into the bathroom needn’t be difficult.

In fact, there are lots of clever ways to adopt the boho bathroom look in your own home with a few simple tips and cleverly added accessories.

On Instagram, Jennifer from The House that Jen Built shows off exactly how much impact plant life can make to a boho scheme. The good news is that many plants thrive in the higher humidity of a bathroom and so it’s the perfect spot for some greenery. Consider hanging plants from the ceiling or windows in a variety of planters to save space when creating your own bohemian jungle.

Confident Colour

When designing your own bohemian bathroom look, don’t shy away from using colour. Taking inspiration from sunnier climates, bold blue, warm orange and rust and vivid green can create a punchy look for colour lovers. Using tiles is a great way to bring colour into a space but if your existing bathroom is decorated in neutral tones, bring in the colour via smaller accessories, towels or a bold shower curtain.

Dark Drama

Of course, a monochrome look can work just as well when adopting a boho style in the bathroom. In my own bathroom seen above, I chose to use black paint to play off the walls and ceiling which creates an unusual but effective backdrop for the many plants in the space. Natural wood tones, woven baskets and ceramics go a long way to create warmth in a monochrome bathroom scheme and only add to a bohemian, relaxed style.

Patterned Tiles

Another hallmark of bohemian style is the mix of patterns which brings a creative energy to any space. If you shy away from using pattern in other rooms of your home, the bathroom may be the perfect spot to dip your feet into this trend. As it’s not a room you tend to spend as much time in, you’ll be less likely to tire of it any time soon – and when it looks this good, you might actually find yourself wanting to spend just a little longer soaking in the bath!

Art Attack

My daughter just said “Mum, do you prefer baths or showers?” I replied “showers in the morning and baths in the evening.” “Well I prefer showers as when you have a bath you’re just soaking in your own dirt!!!” Hmmm… showers from now on then 😂 #outofthemouthsofbabes . . . #bathroomdecor #bathroominspo #gallerywallhashtag #bhghome #gallerywall #plantsofinstagram #interior #houseplantclub #houseplants #plantgang #urbanjunglebloggers #interiormilk #interiorsinspo #interior4inspo #interior4all #interior2you #abmplantlady #interiorblogger #interiorsblog #apartmenttherapy #boholiving #howiboho #Earthinspiredhome #ehdweekendmakeover #actualinstagramhomes #interior_and_living #ikeaatmine #easyinterieur

Back on Instagram, Kerry Lockwood’s gorgeous home is a treasure trove of bohemian eclectic style. Her bathroom shares another secret for a successful boho look – using art, and lots of it! While you may not want to put any artwork that’s particularly precious in a more humid environment, inexpensive prints and framed photographs can create a personality-filled space. Mix up the styles and choose pieces that you love to arrange gallery style on any available wall space and be sure to add in a few other pieces like woven wall hangings to capture that boho vibe.

Tantalising Texture

No bohemian look is complete without lots of textural accents and that’s illustrated perfectly with Theresa Gromski’s lovely bathroom above. Alongside a plethora of plant life, patterned tiles and natural wood tones, she’s included woven baskets and woven wall hangings which provide fantastic texture. With so many cold, hard surfaces in a bathroom space, this addition creates warmth, playing off the coolness of the tiles and ceramics in the space.

Mix and Match Styles

Of course, there is no reason to follow a specific rule book when it comes to bohemian style. Mixing and matching different design styles with bohemian is a great way to create a totally unique look. The bathroom above is the perfect example; while there are hints of boho style in the plant life, wall art and pattern mixing, you’ll see it fits effortlessly into the more traditional aspects of the design – from the ornate fireplace and mirror to the Victorian-style radiator at the window as well as the more contemporary lines of the freestanding tub.
