Trend Watch: Pantone’s Classic Blue 2020

This year our Trend Watch features will continue to take an in-depth look at the latest looks and ideas for interiors, so it seems very timely to delve in to Pantone’s Classic Blue, designated Pantone Colour of the Year for 2020. So, if you’ve got the winter blues, read on to find out how this super-stylish colourway will be manifesting itself across interiors throughout this year and beyond…

Best Blue

Schuller kitchens from InHouse Inspired Room Design are always on top of colour trends, and Siena in Aqua Blue perfectly illustrates the Classic Blue trend. Wayne Dance, MD at InHouse says: “Rich, deep colours are coming into their own in 2020, so Classic Blue taking the top spot as Pantone colour of the year is sure to create a real buzz in 2020. Statement kitchens in strong blue shades create unquestionable impact, but for the more cautious, contrasting classic blue with natural timber fronts, neutral tones or splashes of yellow, adds to the ongoing trend for mix and match. Remember, nothing is set in stone and this beautiful blue further opens the door to a multitude of creative options. If you want to make a real statement at home for 2020, go bold and go blue. This year, Pantone has picked a great colour… Classic Blue not only adds instant serenity, it is the perfect colour for stamping true individuality into any space’.

Bold in Basalt

This bold kitchen was designed and installed by Higham Furniture and is hand finished in the stunning Basalt by Little Greene (a very dark black-blue, often chosen by their clients who want a navy blue kitchen). It looks fabulous with gold and/or brass fittings… the ones used in this project are T-bar door handles and Pull-Bar handles, by Buster+Punch, also available in Smoked Bronze, Black and Steel.

Island Blues

Another reason for choosing classic blue for the kitchen…illustrated here by the exciting use of Cobalt Blue for the island in this spacious kitchen by Martin Moore. Wall cabinets are painted in Steel Grey, and are a warm and calming contrast to the eye-popping blue island. Senior Designer Andrew Wartnaby adds some pertinent design advice: “Clever zoning and a place for everything is the secret behind making large kitchens effective. The large Breakfast Cupboard holds the small electrical appliances and china, glassware and cutlery, the island holds the sink and dishwasher, and the range cooker is flanked by dedicated storage for pots and pans”.

Warming Blues

Jon Butterworth, Director, Arada Stoves says that Classic Blue is set to dominate interior trends throughout 2020 and beyond. “Our Atlantic blue finish is a subtle, metallic matt finish that perfectly enhances this striking colour. Any of our Contemporary Living and Timeless Classic stoves are available in this colour – guaranteed to make an eye-catching statement in any home. Team with crisp white walls, and warming shades of pastel pink or terracotta for a cosy and appealing colour scheme that’s perfect for 2020”. Here we’re showing you the Arada i600 Slimline, available in Low and Mid height models, for wood or solid fuel, and are DEFRA Exempt and approved for use in Smoke Control Areas.

Blue Moods

Helen Shaw, director of Benjamin Moore UK says that blue is one of the most adaptable shades on the colour wheel. She explained: “Rooms benefiting from natural light work well with shades of blue, as the hue balances intense sunlight whilst also maintaining an invigorating, fresh feeling. Blue is one of the colours which require our eyes to do little adjusting, which helps create a feeling of restfulness and harmony in the home. Not only does it bring a sense of calm, but it also vibrant at the same time, adding a striking look to any room in the home”.

Bar Blues

An easily achievable update to get into the Classic Blue theme…a bar stool, occasional chair, dining chair, or footstool. Perfect for adding a swathe of up to the minute colour in a neutral kitchen. Try Carter Bar Stools in Ink Blue Velvet  from MyFurniture to do the job extremely well. Our Sensone Porcelain tiles can add a pale contrast to enhance darker furniture and cabinetry.

Retro Blues

A feature wall in Navy Gold from the Arthouse Luxe Ogee Geo metallic textured vinyl wallpaper collection (available from iwantwallpaper) adds a quirky touch of Classic Blue. We think this would look rather clever in a kitchen alcove perhaps, adding that 2020 look but with a touch of retro style too.

Luxury Classic Blue

To be honest, this sofa would probably be irresistible in any shade, but seeing it in Blue Velvet just reinforces the intense depth of colour. It has beech wood slats and oak-look legs and frame. This would be totally amazing in a sociable family kitchen-living-dining space – perhaps with a matching blue island!

Blue on the Floor

Well, if you’re looking to make a ‘wow statement’ in classic blue, look no further than the Dazzle Shaggy Rug in Midnight Blue from The Rug Seller. This definitely looks fabulous in a living or dining room setting, but we’re also thinking it could work in a bathroom/bedroom as well – it comes in smaller sizes too. For similar pale wood-look flooring, try our Portland Oak Luxury Vinyl Tiles or our Atlantis White Porcelain planks, which can be used for walls and floors.
