National Bed Month: Tiles for the Bedroom

The Sleep Council has declared March as ‘National Bed Month’ which concentrates on how we can get a better night’s sleep. Whilst sleeping is might be one of our favourite pastimes, you might not just want to concentrate on the bed itself when you think about your bedroom. A relaxing haven away from the stresses and worries of everyday life is essential for a good night’s rest, allowing you to wind down and chill out before crawling under the duvet.

When we think about our bedroom design, one thing we may have never considered is tiles for the bedroom floor. We live in a cooler climate after all and while the cooling effect of tiles may make perfect sense in the Mediterranean, using them in the UK can seem an unusual choice. However, today, I want to share four reasons why you might want to reconsider.

Tiles Can Be Warm

First, let’s just knock one of the biggest reasons we don’t see tiles in the bedroom in the UK right off the list – because we assume they’ll be cold. However, underfloor heating is one of the most efficient ways of warming up tiles as well as being a fantastic way to warm a room without the need for radiators. Not only will you have toasty floors to lay your feet, you’ll have more space on the walls to fit that additional chest of drawers.

Tiles Make Breathing Easier

Second, if you suffer from allergies or breathing difficulties, rugs or carpets hold a tremendous amount of dust as well as other irritants. Tiles can create a much cleaner environment as they don’t absorb dust particles and they are a cinch to keep clean. A simple mop and polish and they come up good as new. No worries about spilling your morning coffee on the rug or your cat staining that deep pile either. And less dust and irritants in the air make breathing and sleeping so much easier.

Wood Effect Tiles in the Bedroom

While you may worry that a hard, sterile tile will make a bedroom look visually cold, you may want to consider the latest innovation in tiles which mimic your favourite hard woods. From cool Scandi greys to natural effect oak to nearly any finish you desire, you can find it in a porcelain tile. These wood effect tiles create that warmth that we associate with wood floors without the upkeep but all of the style.

They’ll Look Great for Years

And finally, other materials like carpet, wood and laminate flooring will deteriorate over time without proper care. Moisture can warp the flooring and it may be more prone to marking, scratching or staining. Tile floors are incredibly hardwearing and easy to keep clean which is why we tend to use them in areas like kitchens, bathrooms or entryways. Why not give yourself the pleasure of an easy to maintain floor throughout your home?
