Inspirational Ideas for Open Plan Kitchens

As the vast majority of kitchens are open plan, kitchen designers today have to ensure that any flooring will be suitable to flow through from the kitchen to the dining space, living, and family spaces (and even to the outside terrace for some lucky people!). If you’re currently wrangling with flooring ideas for your next project, or are maybe even just curious about the current trends for open plan kitchen floor coverings then read on for some inspirational ideas…

A Neutral Background

Open plan kitchens may have to accommodate a seating area, coffee table, dining space and occasional furniture, as well as the kitchen cabinetry. We rather like this simple layout, where the kitchen stretches across one run of cabinetry, leaving a generous open space for sofa and dining area and of course, views of the terrace. Try our Stonebase Light Grey ceramic tiles for a calm, neutral and super-tough background that will work with any future changes of colour – such as a pink sofa!

Contrasting Concepts

This open plan kitchen ticks all the style boxes – it has a focal point dark island, ceiling lights, a dining area, and opens into the garden too! The grounding feature is the choice of our Dakota Grey Riven Porcelain slabs, which are large format and the dark shade enhances the light and airy ivory shade chosen for the walls and cabinetry. A very good example of how contrasts create a successful scheme we think you’ll agree!

Marvellous Marble

Create a slick open plan scheme by pairing the breakfast bar cladding with matching floor tiles for a space-enhancing and expansive look. Here, our Room White Polished Marble design porcelain tiles, which are also suited to walls and panels, streamline this open plan space to perfection. For a similar finishing touch, try Olson Globe Pendants from Heal’s. Similar bar stools and dining chairs are from the Matteo collection at Cult Furniture.

Parallel Lines

This gorgeous open plan bespoke Shaker kitchen from Higham Furniture  has a layout that leads the eye straight through the working part of the kitchen, beyond the tall glazed doors and out onto the terrace…the whole space is open plan, and includes a seating area beyond the peninsula. The pale colour scheme and ceiling lights which follow the lines of the layout make this a perfectly designed open plan area. For similar floor tiles, look at our Nordic Wood Design Porcelain planks in Pearl.

Glossing It Over

This glossy open plan kitchen from Roundhouse Design makes the most of a bright space, and is enhanced by the high gloss and walnut cabinetry, combined with composite stone work surfaces. This project is a great example of a slightly unusual combination of materials – but it works seamlessly as well as making a huge impact. We love the wide walkways between island and perimeter cabinets, and how it all flows towards the dining space and beyond into the garden. For a similar glossy look, consider our Place marble effect polished porcelain floor tiles.

Open Plan to the Outdoors

This spectacular project is literally open plan to outdoors, with matching tiles for inside and outside, emphasising the virtually seamless flow between kitchen, dining space and outdoor terrace. The tiles shown here are our Dakota Light Grey Outdoor Riven porcelain slabs, which have a high slip resistance, and as they’re large format, help create a smooth, free-flowing look.

Simply Spacious

The Dunsen Ivory porcelain floor tiles chosen for this project add a warmer touch – all white tiles and furniture could have looked a little too clinical. These are matt finish, in a soft cream shade, and are designed to have an authentic sandstone appearance. A great choice for adding a different perspective, these large-format tiles are 800mm x 800mm.

Well Placed

Not all open plan kitchens have endless space for walkways and wide open vistas. This pretty kitchen is from the Grained Collection in Dove Grey by LochAnna Kitchens, and it shows a compact yet clever layout. The island has a seating area and views of the garden, the dining room is adjacent and within easy reach for serving and setting down crockery, and there’s also a small casual seating area with two occasional chairs between the two main spaces. Perfectly open-planned!

Squared Space

This open-plan layout could potentially work in pretty much any sized kitchen – pick your island concept (with sink or without, hob or not, or a completely clear prep space) and add a long run of cabinets running parallel. We suppose it’s almost a updated version of a ‘galley kitchen’, but with room for manoeuvre; plain and simple floor tiles do the job admirably – these shown here are our Extreme Matt White Porcelain tiles, which have rectified edges for a very precise, neat finish.
