What Is Oiled Wood Flooring?

Oiled wood flooring has a real oak veneer bonded to a stable plywood core, and an oiled finish means that top layer has been treated with a penetrating oil rather than a surface lacquer. The oil soaks into the wood grain itself, giving a more natural, low-sheen look than a glossy lacquered floor.

What's The Difference Between Brushed & Oiled, Invisible Oiled, And UV Oiled?

Brushed & oiled boards have their surface lightly textured before oiling, which opens up the grain and gives a more rustic, tactile finish. Invisible oiled is a matt, barely-there finish that keeps the wood looking as natural as possible. UV oiled uses ultraviolet light to cure the oil almost instantly during manufacturing, giving a slightly more durable, factory-hardened surface straight out of the box.

Is Oiled Or Lacquered Flooring Easier To Maintain?

Oiled floors are actually easier to spot-repair, since a scuffed or worn patch can be treated with a bit more oil rather than needing the whole floor resanded and relacquered. The trade-off is that oiled floors typically need re-oiling every 12 to 18 months in busy areas, whereas a lacquered floor can often go several years between maintenance.

Which Thickness Should I Choose - 10mm Or Up To 15mm?

A thicker board, like our 14mm or 15mm options, generally has a deeper real wood veneer layer, which means it can be sanded and refinished more times over its lifespan. Thinner 10mm boards are usually a more budget-friendly option and still perform well, but have less veneer depth to work with if you ever want to resand the floor in future.

Is Herringbone Harder To Install Than Standard Plank Flooring?

Herringbone takes longer to lay because each board is cut and fitted at an angle to create the pattern, so it's more labour-intensive than a straight plank layout. It's a good idea to buy a little extra for wastage on a herringbone floor, since more cutting is involved than with standard planks.

Can Oiled Wood Flooring Be Used With Underfloor Heating?

Many oiled wood floors are suitable for underfloor heating, but always check the specific product page first, since it depends on the board's construction and the manufacturer's guidance. If confirmed compatible, the system should be run at a moderate, steady temperature rather than high heat, to avoid stressing the wood.

Where Can Oiled Wood Flooring Be Used?

It works well in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and dining areas. It's not recommended for bathrooms or other consistently wet rooms, since even an oiled finish doesn't give real wood the water resistance of a porcelain tile — for those spaces, our wood effect tiles are a more practical alternative that looks similar.

How Do I Care For An Oiled Wood Floor Day To Day?

A soft brush or vacuum to remove grit, followed by an occasional damp (not wet) mop with a cleaner made for oiled floors, is normally enough for regular upkeep. Standing water and steam mops should be avoided, since excess moisture can dull the finish or damage the wood over time.
