Red Quarry Tile
I found this a very difficult tile to lay, and wouldn't recommend it, doubly so for inexperienced users. First, for a nominal 9mm thick tile, it is actually 6mm thick with 3mm raised bosses on the underside. 9mm overall, but not uniformly. Second, the bosses on the underside complicate cutting and trimming the tiles as they tend to interfere with cut lines. My success rate with cutting was about one in three, so I was glad I'd ordered extra tiles. Thirdly, the bosses on the bottom made using spacers problematic -especial when dry laying to test layouts- but also during actual laying -as the tiles would initially allow spacers to slide underneath at the corners. Fourthly, and partly my own inexperience, some of the tiles I bought were non-slip patterned, and these proved extremely difficult to clean up after laying and grouting. Despite using slow setting tile cement, there was a sweet spot (I missed) when the cement or grout was hardened enough to be able to clean the tile without disturbing the joint and before the cement or grout had hardened too much to remove. Trouble was, I thought I was ready for this and working as carefully as I could, not just 'dumping grout on and spreading' but being as precise as I could and cleaning as I worked, yet the pattern functioned as if designed to trap and harden any cement quicker than the bulk in the joints. About 60% of my tiles have a shadow of ground on the raised pattern.
Advice
Sorry to hear you had issues installing and cleaning the quarry tiles. In regards to cutting them as they are a natural stone, we would recommend a wet wheel cutter rather than a manual cutter as they are very durable. The Ridges on the bottom are there to help install the tiles so they sit flush into the adhesive bed however this should not affect the cutting when using a wet wheel cutter. The shadowing mentioned sounds like grout residues which have been left on the tile so we would recommend Fila Deterdek diluted 1:5 with water to remove this. If you need any further advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.
