Ultimate Combinations: Patterned Floors to complement Plain Walls

There’s so many things to love about patterned floors – as well as offering a clear opportunity to add a swathe of colour and interest to a visually large area, patterned floors can set a style theme that resonates throughout the home. Multi-coloured patterned tiles can be used to focus on a particular colour elsewhere in the home, or to repeat a particular motif. ‘Plain’ walls can be considered as a simple paint colour, or a stretch of plain coloured tiles. Be adventurous – and if you’re prepared to be try a new paint colour, the scheme can be straightforward to update with a change of focus colour…

Going for Gold

Plain colours in the kitchen are often favoured by kitchen designers … and are definitely a good option, especially with longevity in mind. Add a classic touch of pattern and colour with our Calacatta Gold Polished Marble Effect porcelain wall and floor tiles. The subtle shades of gold and brown add colour and pattern, allowing the floor to stand out dramatically against plain cabinetry and walls.

Out of the Blue

A dramatic new space, such as a living-dining-kitchen extension, is often kept very simple, décor wise. Plain white walls generally emphasis the shape of the structure itself, and large glass doors or panels are an architect’s dream. Add an adventurous touch of colour and pattern with floor tiles, such as our Calacatta Blue Marble Effect porcelain tiles, each measures 600mm x 600mm, staying in tune with the large scale of the space.

Traditional Patterns

Using traditional Victorian-style patterned tiles for the hall floor will set the scene for the whole house. Tiles are a totally practical choice for family homes with busy hallways  – especially if bicycles are regularly wheeled through! Consider our Victoriana Blakeney Wall & Floor ceramic tiles in a mix of brown, rust and grey-blue on a light cream background. Each tile measures 316mm x 316mm and is designed to look like a traditional encaustic tile, with faux grout lines. Again, this patterned tile can work with future changes of colour scheme – we’re imagining the possibility of a striking blue-grey feature wall one day …

Perfectly Patterned

This stunning colour scheme adds an element of pattern whilst still blending into a natural theme – and the tiles are used to run right through the ground floor, into the kitchen-dining space. These ceramic tiles have pre-scored grout lines – which could be grouted in a darker shade to add definition to the scheme if required. Each tile measures 450mm x 450mm and is designed to look like four smaller tiles. Fabulous with underfloor heating, and anyone who needs a bit of help on choosing and installing electric underfloor heating   can click  here for advice from our experts by phone, email or online chat.

Flooring Focus

Smaller spaces, such as bathrooms and cloakrooms can often accommodate a patterned floor better than patterned walls – which may be fully occupied with fittings and cabinets. Our Illusion Sand Polished Wall & Floor tiles look fabulous as a patterned floor feature, as well as working beautifully for a scheme that requires matching floor and wall tiles.

Luxurious Living Rooms

Yes, it’s Calacatta Golden Grey Marble Polished Porcelain tiles again, but this time in a living room. Just the right choice to add luxury – not just because of the golden colour, but for the luxury look of polished porcelain, replicating traditional marble beautifully. Keep warm underfoot by including electric underfloor heating in your plans, find our more here.

Simple Elegance

For the plain wall aspect of our plain and patterned combination, consider classic plain white tiles such as Luken White Pre-Scored Wall Tiles. Each individual tile measures 600mm x 300mm and has the appearance of eight smaller tiles. They can be used in a vertical format, as shown here, or horizontally. Featuring the pattern vertically emphasises the height of a room, using them horizontally can emphasise the width. Finish off with patterned tiles for the floor, as shown here with Aritz Pink Patterned , also from the Luken collection which embraces both plains and patterns.

Plainly Pink

Plain pink tiles add warmth and personality to a bathroom scheme; these are Manacor Blush Pink, which are a wonderful choice for a plain-but-not-plain wall. These tiles have subtle shade variations, which are highlighted by the high gloss finish and deep puddle effect glaze. Team up with patterned floor tiles, such as Luken Bliss Grey for that pattern-plain combination.

Blue Lights

This almost seamless light blue wall looks invigorating and fresh, thanks to the Sweet Light Blue Wall tiles, which are perfectly plain, in a 600mm x 300mm format. We’re imagining these tiles in an ocean-side setting, but they would also look fabulous in a country cottage, adding a feeling of fresh air and space. For the patterned element of this combination, we’re going for Adele Light Blue for just the right amount of colour and pattern.

Bright in White

Another perfect example of the winning combination of plain walls  – in this case, our Luken White Pre-Scored Wall Tiles and a touch of interest, colour and pattern using our Arinka Marine Patterned Floor Tile, which is also part of the Luken collection. As with many multi-colour patterns, the combination of colours allows future change of colour scheme regarding the walls and accessories, without disturbing the floor tiles! Think along the lines of mid-blue, dark navy or soft greys for accessories such as cabinetry, shelves, plant stands and towels.
